ULINK Announced its Release of Drive Master® 2004 Professional Edition Supports Native Command Queuing Feature

The System Manufactures Now Migrating to NCQ Feature Set

Cupertino, CA, March 12, 2004—Ulink Technology, an innovative technology and engineering company, announced in the SATA Plugfest today that the company's newly released software, Drive Master® 2004 Professional Edition, supports Native Command Queuing (NCQ) test. This new version of Drive Master will help system integrators, manufactures and IC Chip designers test the new Serial ATA II (SATA II) queuing feature set.

Native Command Queuing is a new SATA II protocol defined to improve system performance by utilizing SATA FIS (Frame Information Structure) to transfer a group of overlapped commands. Using this feature, the host CPU can issue up to 32 First Party DMA Queued commands to the device. The device, after queuing those commands, will calculate the best performance based on its rotational and track to track latency and reorder command execution sequence to gain better performance.

By using the NCQ protocol, the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) will have a very fast and simple command handling, compared with other queuing schemes. Because the command is executed by the FIS based data transfer, the host CPU minimizes its protocol handling and thus improves the system performance. Multiple command completion is handled by a single interrupt, greatly reducing the CPU overhead.

Drive Master, a powerful script-driven test software developed by Ulink Technology, supports SATA I and II specification as well as ATA/ATAPI specifications. The program can operate in both PIO and UDMA transfer modes. It supports all hard drive commands defined in the ATA specification. It also includes test scripts for hard disk common access method (CAM) and regression tests. In addition, it supports performance measurement by displaying the execution time on every command executed.

“The NCQ protocol is a very new concept for the ATA interface. ULINK Technology is providing a complete test solution to support this new protocol,?Commented Shawn Chou, the Product Marketing Director at ULINK. “We believe by providing the tool set, the industry can quickly debug and test all of the design issues and complete its migration to the better performance system solution,?added Edwin Kuo, Director of Sales at ULINK.
